Holistic Horse Care
Here are a couple holistic horse care tips for the summer months.
When I had my first horse way back when and wanted to give him a bath my Mom told me " Your grandpa always used Pine Tar soap". I didn't know what that was, but we went to the local drug store and got a bar of Grandpa's Pine Tar Soap ( that was the brand name). It work great. I got my gelding wet and than just took the bar and started lathering him up it. He was sqeaky clean. I still use the Pine Tar soap on my horses today. ]My also suggested a Vinegar rinse after the bath. Just fill a bucket with water and add a cup or two of White Vinegar. After you have finished bathing your horse dip the sponge in the bucket and use it to rinse your horse than let him dry. It makes their coat shiney and soft while repeling flies as well.
If you are looking for a natural fly repellent here is a recipe for one. I use it every summer and it works great. Mix 1 Cup of Vinegar with 6 drops of Cintronella Oil in a half gallon of water. I mix it up in a pump spray bottle. It's so easy to do, ecomoical and it works too. I think it's better for my horses and the enviroment.
