Our Horse Therapy During Tough Times

To say that 2020 has been a stressful year might well be an understatement. So many things in our lives have changed due COVID 19 that it's hard to remember what "normal" was like before. The one thing I know that has remained the same for me is my horses. I imagine that's true for so many of us. I think we are so fortunate to have horses in our lives. They are truly therapists.

I think we can all agree that during tough times in our lives horses have been there to help get us through those times. There have been studies on this, but we don't need a study to tell us that we already know what horses do for us. They now tell us connecting with nature is a great way to destress, again I think we know that. A long time ago I read quote that said " Have you ever seen a horse outside a Therapist office,". I'm certainly not saying horse therapy works for every issue, but where stress is concerned I 'm a believer in it.

Knowing every morning during the " lock down" that I had to get up and take care of the herd gave me a sense of normal in otherwise abnormal time in my life. Having to feed, turn out, water and clean stalls for my horses provide so much for me during those days. I got some exercise and it kept me from dwelling on stressful things. Seeing my horses and being with them just made me feel as if everything was going to be alright. Now let's be honest not every day with your horse can be a good one, but still better than a day with out them. Even when the weather was colder just going out and grooming the horses made me feel better or even just watching them graze. Some days just leaning into my horse's mane and breathing was aroma therapy that got me through the day. I know I'm not the only one out there who is grateful for having horses in my life during this time.

Winston Churchhill was certianly right " “There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man.”

Our horses deserve a little extra pat on the neck and extra treat for helping us make through these stressful days.
